Painting Her Way: The Ink Art of Fang Zhaoling

Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s 20th Century Chinese Female Artists Exhibition Series aims to present the diverse achievements of female artists who, according to the organization, remain an under-represented and under-appreciated segment across Chinese communities.

The first exhibition in the series, presented by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, will feature a selection of paintings and calligraphy of artist Fang Zhaoling (1914-2006). It also focuses on how Fang, who was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu and was educated at The University of Manchester, The University of Hong Kong, and Oxford University, played a significant role in the revival of ink painting after chaotic reforms in the mid-century.

“We are very proud to present this major solo exhibition of Fang Zhaoling’s distinguished works. Despite the tremendous talents of female artists in the 20th century, they rarely receive due attention for their creative attainments and influences compared to their male counterparts,” said Alice Mong, Executive Director of Asia Society Hong Kong Center, at the exhibition’s opening ceremony.
